Thanks to her charm, allure and ability to traverse multiple mediums, Gugino remained one of Hollywood's more in-demand actresses. From there, she had supporting parts in "Watchmen" (2009) and "Sucker Punch" (2011), played Hank Moody's lawyer on season four of "Californication" (Showtime, 2007-14) and reprised Karen Sisco for "Justified" (FX, 2010-15) before starring in a chilling adaptation of the horror classic "The Haunting of Hill House" (Netflix 2018). Meanwhile, she had big-screen roles in "The Lookout" (2007) and "American Gangster" (2007), and received the most buzz of her career by playing super-agent Amanda Daniels - chief nemesis of Ari Gold - on "Entourage" (HBO, 2004-2011). After attracting the attention of important industry players, Gugino suddenly found herself the star of her own series, "Karen Sisco" (ABC, 2003), which was based on a character created by Elmore Leonard, but the series was canceled after 10 episodes despite positive reviews. Moving easily back-and-forth between movies and television, she had supporting roles in "Snake Eyes" (1998) and "Spy Kids" (2001), while joining the cast of "Chicago Hope" (CBS, 1994-2000) during its final season. After a brief modeling career, Gugino became a regular on the primetime soap "Falcon Crest" (CBS, 1980-1991) and later had a regular role on the first season of "Spin City" (ABC, 1996-2002) before the show was revamped. The success of her creative partnership with Flanagan led him to cast her again on the follow-up series "The Haunting of Bly Manor," this time as the older version of Jamie Taylor (Amelia Eve), who acts as an uncredited narrator known as "The Storyteller" throughout most of the show.Equally dazzling on both big and small screens, actress Carla Gugino's talent that transcends any medium. Gugino's customarily brilliant performance earned her acclaim and awards, including a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress in a Streaming Presentation (via IMDb). Her death, revealed in Episode 1, hangs over the entirety of the 10-episode series, serving as the focal point for the flashbacks that reveal what happened to the Crains during their fateful 1992 stay at Hill House. ![]() And there was no character in it with a more gut-wrenching story than Olivia Crain, the architect and matriarch who moves the Crain family into Hill House with the intention of renovating it into her own design, only to fall victim to the mansion's ghostly occurrences. And, most recently, in "San Andreas," Gugino played another estranged wife who reconciles with the protagonist over the course of the movie: Emma Gaines, whose divorce from Ray (Dwayne Johnson) is interrupted by a Los Angeles-shattering earthquake and other supervening events.Īlthough Flanagan's command of tension and nightmarish thrills was on full display as always, "Hill House" became especially notable for the way it melded horror elements with honest, deeply-felt character drama. Popper's Penguins" also starred Gugino as the ex-wife of the main character, who begins dating him again when the titular penguins turn his life around. In the Ridley Scott crime drama "American Gangster," Gugino was Laurie, the divorcing wife of Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), a small role that nonetheless proved a great showcase for her uniquely piercing stare and impassioned speechifying skills. She played museum docent Rebecca Hutman in "Night at the Museum," whom Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) helped out by introducing her to the subject of her thesis, Sacagawea (Mizuo Peck) herself. ![]() During this period, Gugino was most frequently seen in theaters as the wife or main love interest of male protagonists.
